Technology Through Time!

Early on in the term, we made a timeline of technologies that had been created for education, beginning in 1999.

The technologies that I chose were:
Interactive whiteboards (SMART boards, Promethean boards)
Online field trips
3rd generation iMacs
I-Clickers
Fully-automated classrooms
The iPad

Most of these technologies were ones that I had already known about, but it was interesting to put them all into a timeline and see how technology has progressed. It was also interesting to note which of these technologies has really stuck and is used a lot in classrooms (interactive whiteboards) and which ones have disappeared after the initial hype (the i-clicker).

This project seemed to focus on both Standard 1 (Basic Computer/Technology Operations and Concepts) and Standard 3 (Application of Technology in Instruction). Doing the actual Powerpoint presentation helped me work on my Powerpoint skills (good design, text layout, picture layout, etc.) and the actual content of the presentation was my research on good applications of technology in the classroom.

Here's a link to my Powerpoint (through Moodle), if you'd like to check it out again:

Assistive Technologies Power Point

This project seemed to be two-fold for us: we had to research a topic regarding education and technology and then make a presentation about it. We had the choice between using the SMART board (too scary for me still!) and just a classic power point (we've all done a million of those at this point in our academic careers).

I ended up choosing Assistive Technologies and how it can be used in the classroom as my topic. This is a really personal topic for me since I work during the summer with students with special needs. I have seen a lot of these assistive technologies in action and I have to say... they are amazing! It's absolutely incredible what can be done with technology to help students who can't communicate as they'd like to or need a little extra help in the classroom. I think the other students learned a lot from the presentation (at least I hope they did...) It's certainly a newer area of technology in the classroom and also one that doesn't get as much focus as other areas like social networking or iPads in the classroom.

You can go and see my Powerpoint presentation, which has a link on Moodle:

RefWorks Bibliography

Anne Giffey came in and talked to us about using RefWorks and the ERIC database to find and organize scholarly articles and documents that we might find in our research. It was really helpful to learn to do this, and incredible to see the easy way that all this information can be exported, stored and organized so fast and so easily.

Furthering ourselves professionally as teachers is really important, to constantly be finding the best resources for improving our classrooms and our teaching. According to Standard 2 of the ISBE Elementary Education Content Standards, too, technology is a great way to continue and conduct that research that will make us better educators for our students.

What follows is my completed RefWorks bibliography, with all ten resources that I found:

Welcome!

Well, here's the first post on this blog that is supposed to be my portfolio for this class.

I've actually enjoyed this class for the most part. I went in thinking that this was just a requirement, something I had to do for the major, but I really learned a lot. Some of this stuff is absolutely incredible (and I want one of those iPads...) and the applications in the classroom are really cool.

I absolutely understand the impulse to hate technology (and, in fact, most day-to-day technology gives me an absolute headache...) but if it all exists and it might really help some of our students, there's certainly no reason not to embrace it and use it in the classroom. It's here to stay, so we might as well learn to use it, and learn to use it well.
